Campbell’s Soup

“M’m! M’m! Good!”  Even though soup was what he would become famous for, Joseph Campbell started out as a fruit vendor.  He and partner Abraham Anderson, an icebox manufacturer, founded the Anderson & Campbell Preserve Company in Camden, New Jersey in 1869. The company canned tomatoes, vegetables, jellies, condiments and mincemeat. In 1877, Campbell bought Anderson out and changed the company name to Joseph Campbell & Company.

Company executive Herberton Williams adopted the colors in 1898 because he so liked the colors of the Cornell University football team’s uniforms.

Have you ever wondered where the gold medal seal on the can came from? Campbell’s Soup won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition in 1900. Ever since then, the image was placed on the can labels.
