Also, on this day in 1962 Alton Brown was born. American celebrity chef and author. Host of Food Network TV shows ‘Good Eats’, ‘Iron Chef America’ and ‘Next Iron Chef’, ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’, etc.

In 1849 Jacob Perkins died. Perkins was issued the first U.S. patent for a refrigerating machine. It used sulfuric ether compression.

In 1975 Former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa disappeared after visiting the Red Fox Restaurant in suburban Detroit, Michigan. His remains have never been found.

In 2013 A New York appeals court upheld a ruling that the New York City Board of Health exceeded its authority when it tried to ban sodas larger than 16 ounces.
