Also, on this day in 1818 George Palmer was born. Palmer, of Huntley and Palmer biscuit manufacturers, introduced the first biscuit tins.

In 1907 John James McLaughlin of Ontario, Canada is awarded a trademark for Canada Dry Ginger Ale, “the champagne of ginger ales.”

In 1909 Quebec prohibits the sale of alcoholic candy being sold by some 30 stores in Montreal.

In 1943 Pre-sliced bread was banned in the U.S. for the duration of World War II, to conserve metal from spare parts that might be needed.

In 1990 The first McDonald’s in Moscow opened.
