Also, on this day in 1878 Queen Victoria Market (‘Vic Market’) opened in Melbourne, Australia. A historic open air market spread over two city blocks, selling everything from Australian fruit and vegetables, local and imported gourmet foods, to cosmetics, clothing and souvenirs.

In 1952 Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada: more than 1,300 cattle are killed to halt a foot-and-mouth disease epidemic.
