It’s National Cheese Doodle Day! Cheese doodles are a snack food made with cornmeal that has been puffed, baked, and coated with cheddar cheese. Morrie Yohai invented the cheese doodle in the 1940s. After serving as a Marine in World War II, he returned to his home in the Bronx and took over the family business—a snack food company called Old London Foods.

During the 1960s, Wise Foods, Inc. acquired the company and cheese doodles became part of the potato chip division. Today, cheese doodles are one of Wise’s strongest brands. The company produces over 15 million pounds of cheese doodles each year. That’s enough to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools! Also, on this day:

-In 1836 Charles Goodnight was born. He is said to have devised the first ‘chuck wagon’ from an Army wagon in the 1850s or 1860s, with various shelves and compartments for food, equipment, utensils, medical supplies, etc.

-In 1910 Momofuku Ando was born in Taiwan. Mr. Ando was the founder of Nissin Food Products, and invented ‘Instant Ramen’ noodles.

-In 1955 Fernand Point died (born 1897). Well known French Chef and restaurateur. His restaurant La Pyramide was considered by many to be the greatest in the world. Paul Bocuse, Louis Outhier, Alain Chapel and Jean and Pierre Troisgros all trained under Point, and he is considered to be the father of modern French Cuisine.
