Ever wonder why anyone would use nuts to make coffee? Have you ever tasted Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee and said, “I don’t taste any nut flavour here, what gives?”
The coffee doesn’t actually contain any nuts. In 1926, William Black opened his very first nut shop in New York City. The store as you can guess, was called Chock full O’ Nuts. In 1932, he converted 18 nut stores in his chain to coffee shops as nuts became an expensive commodity. He began selling a good cup of coffee and a sandwich for 5 cents.
In 1953, he began selling his own brand of coffee, Chock Full O’ Nuts in grocery stores. The brand became an instant success at the time.
